Voltbuddy Energy Saver – How Does It Work?

Voltbuddy or Volt Buddy is a power saving device that helps people cut down bad electricity and save their electricity cost. It works this way – use its latest technology to clean your powerlines and prevent electricity overflow. Thereby, stopping the overconsumption of force, this remarkably reduces your electric bill.

However, aside the glowing claims and reviews on getvoltbuddy.com, there is more to what meets the eyes.

The Manufacturers of this energy saving device have made so many claims which we’ll be looking into. But first of all, this is how to use this energy saver;

  • plug it into a power outlet
  • a green indicator light will come on

Viola! It has started working

Sounds pretty simple right? Sadly, this product has some drawbacks.

What You Need To Know Before Buying & Using Voltbuddy Energy Saver

First of all, as an electrician myself,  the only one way for anyone to save on electricity and that is not to use it. Any device that claims it can reduce electricity usage is simply selling you a lie. getvoltbuddy.com claims there’s some kind of science behind the product.  However, not only is the ‘science’ complete hogwash, but even the so called endorsement by The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, NBC, ABC, USA Today, is totally fake. These broadcasting companies do not endorse Voltbuddy, they’ve also not mentioned it in any of their shows.

Secondly, Volt Buddy is not equipped to save energy. When I dissected it, I discovered it only contains a capacitor placed across the power line. This actually might do a little bit of power factor correction, but you are not billed for reactive power at home. So it saves you nothing in money. It probably has *just enough* effect that the statements in the ads are not complete lies, but the device is still completely useless in general.

Meanwhile, there’s the danger of electrocution. The capacitor inside the Wattsave is not rated for connection across the AC line. It is a fire hazard if there is a lightning strike nearby. Capacitors connected directly to the AC line are supposed to have an “X” rating for safety.

Thirdly, it can not reduce electrical consumption. What you should know is this ‘There is NO WAY any device of this size can stabilize a home electrical AC supply or produce the savings advertised. Electrical consumption is based on total power consumed and NOT phase corrected VAR.

Is Voltbuddy a Scam Energy Saver?

As a professional electrician I’ve taken a close look at Voltbuddy device and see it’s nothing but a scam, a fad product. It cannot slash your power bill up to 1% or even 50%. It also cannot filter dirty electricity as claimed. Meanwhile, Voltex, Voltbox, Watt Rescue, Ecowatt, Miracle Watt, are names which it was called in the past. When you click on the links, you’ll see tons of complaints from users calling it BS. If I were you I wouldn’t go an inch near it, except of course you just want to use it as a toy.

Voltbuddy Energy Saver Alternative: 5 Easy Ways to Reduce Your Power Bill

Shutdown your computer

If you work from home or run an office, your computer is likely the culprit causing you high electricity bill. Computers are some of the biggest energy users in office buildings. Turn your monitor off at night and ditch the screensaver.

2. Choose Energy Saving Bulbs

For your information, LED bulbs are the most energy efficient lighting option. It use 75% less electricity than incandescent bulbs. The also have no mercury, and last about 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. So opt for LED bulbs over incandescent bulbs.

3. Unplug Idle Electronics.

You have devices like televisions, microwaves, scanners, printers, etc.? Unplug them after use! They use standby power, even when off. Some chargers continue to pull small amounts of energy, even when plugged in (a good judge of this is if a charger feels warm to the touch). In the US, the total electricity consumed by idle electronics equals the annual output of 12 power plants (EPA).

4. Use a Power Strip to Reduce Your Plug load.

To avoid forgetting to unplug your devices, use a power strip to turn all devices off at once. Flipping the switch on your power strip has the same effect as unplugging each socket from the wall, preventing phantom energy loss.

This is very important. Especially when you’re not making use of the light. Just one switch and you’re done!

  1. Well I got a question. I live in Florida. My neighbor is a snow bird and hasn’t been here all summer. Her thermostat is set at 80, she unplugs things before she leaves, excluding her refrigerator. Her bill this month is $150 higher than all summer long. How can that be when no one is even there and nothing is being used? She has the Elon Musk power saver up north and she says it cuts her electric bill by 50%. Why is everyone calling it a scam?
